"Although we have not yet tallied the fund-raising proceeds for this year, we expect to exceed our initial goal of $250,000," says Princeton resident Michelle Darling, executive vice president, Prudential Financial, Newark, and chair of this year's celebration. "Celebration is a festive annual evening to raise funds for merit awards and scholarships," explains Judy Goss Boyd, vice president, office of university advancement at NJIT. "We always honor a corporate partner, outstanding alumnus, a special friend of the university, and/or an outstanding entrepreneur." This year honorees included N. Eric Johanson, (class of 1965) chairman, Johanson Dielectrics, Inc., Sylmar, CA, and a resident of Camarillo, CA. Johanson received the award for entrepreneurial leadership. Raymond J. McGowan, executive vice president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company, Houston, TX. McGowan, (Class of 1964) and a resident of Katy, TX, received the outstanding alumnus award. Daniel A. Henderson, president of PhoneTel Communications Inc., Fort Worth, TX, and a resident of Weatherford, TX, received the award for special friend of the university. Schering-Plough Corporation and Foundation, Kenilworth, NJ, received the corporate award. Joseph C. Connors, vice president and general counsel, accepted on behalf of the corporation. Michele S. Darling, executive vice president corporate governance and human resources, Prudential Financial, Newark, and the chair for Celebration gave Connors the plaque. It is a tradition for the winner of the previous year to not only chair the following year's event, but to present the corporate award to the new honoree. New Jersey corporations and individuals who sponsor the tables contributed to the evening's proceeds. "Members of our board of overseers, who are leaders in regional and international corporations are our most typical benefactor," says Boyd. "And, once again, we are very grateful for the continued leadership role of our overseers in these activities." NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
of Architecture, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors
College and College of Computing Sciences. The division of continuing professional education offers
adults eLearning, off campus degrees and short courses. Expertise and research initiatives include
architecture and building science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, environmental
engineering and science, information technology, manufacturing, materials, microelectronics,
multimedia, telecommunications, transportation and solar astrophysics. Yahoo! Internet
Life magazine cites NJIT as a "perennially most wired" university.
