Schuring has worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy and the New Jersey Department of Transportation. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers; a member of the national engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi and the New York Academy of Science. Schuring received his doctorate in geotechnical engineering in 1987 from Stevens Institute of Technology; his master's degree in the same field from the University of Alaska in 1977; and his bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1974 from Stevens Institute of Technology. NJIT is a public, scientific and technological research university enrolling
more than 8,800 students. The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to students
in 80 degree programs throughout its six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, New Jersey School
of Architecture, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors
