Industrial Engineering Career Day Offers Opportunities
At NJIT For High School Students
NEWARK -- Tuesday, January 20, 1998 -- High school students who may want to follow a future in industrial engineering are invited to take part in "Industrial Engineering Career Day" on Wednesday, February 4, 1998 at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
The event will acquaint high school students with the industrial engineering (IE) discipline and inform them of the diverse and rewarding careers available to IE graduates.
"The idea is to provide exposure for this field, one of the least known engineering fields,’ said Dr. Athanassios Bladikas, the department chairperson and an associate professor of industrial engineering at NJIT. "We want to demonstrate what NJIT offers in what we consider to be a very exciting major field."
At NJIT, nearly 40 percent of full-time industrial engineering majors are women and nearly 30 percent are Hispanic, according to Bladikas.
Industrial engineers design processes and systems that improve quality and productivity and make significant contributions to their employers by saving money while, at the same time, improving the workplace for fellow workers. Manufacturing firms and service industries hire a significant number of industrial engineers in sales and marketing, finance, information systems, personnel, and other fields.
IE Career Day begins at 10 a.m. with an overview of the study and research areas presented by NJIT faculty. Tours of facilities and laboratory demonstrations in the areas of robotics, computer testing of human performances, simulation modeling and use of multimedia, flexible manufacturing and design for manufacturability will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Following lunch and informal discussions, recent graduates employed in various industries such as health care, management consulting, services and manufacturing will make presentations to participants.
As reported in the June 26, 1995 issue of Fortune magazine, the typical beginning salary for IE graduates is $35,000 with an average salary of $67,000. The typical top salary is $215,000.
The event is free, but space is limited. Reservations should be made by calling (973) 596-3660. A final program; directions will be sent to those planning to attend.
