NJIT Math Professor Predicts Major League Baseball Season
WHO: Bruce Bukiet, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematical sciences at New Jersey
Institute of Technology who has an expertise in mathematical modeling, has issued his Major League
Baseball 2003 analysis.
WHAT:Bukiet’s model predicts that the Yankees, White Sox, Mariners and Red Sox will top
the American League (AL), while the Phillies, Astros, D’backs and Giants will take the National
League (NL) The Phillies should dethrone the Braves for the NL East title with 92 wins. The Astros
should win 95 games to take the NL Central, and the D’backs should repeat in the West with 102
wins. The Giants should win 92 to again take the NL wild card slot. In the AL, the Yankees should
win 110 to take the East, while the White Sox should win 90 to take the Central. The Mariners
should win the West with 106 wins. More information is available on Bukiet’s web page:
http://m.njit.edu/~bukiet/baseball.html
WHERE:Bukiet is available weekdays for interviews in his office at 518 Cullimore Hall or
by phone: (973) 596-8392. His email address is bukiet@m.njit.edu.
HOW:Bukiet’s model gives a game-by-game probability of each team winning, taking into account
each team’s schedule. The average for each team’s pitching performance is applied, although during the
season daily win probabilities will be posted on his website:
http://www.egrandslam.com.
BACKGROUND: Bukiet recently discussed his baseball model on CNN Headline News. He’s also been
interviewed by CBC radio featured in the Jerusalem Post, the National Post (Canada) and other
publications.
