NJIT STUDENTS COLLECT OLD CELL PHONES TO “GIVE BACK” TO NEWARK COMMUNITY (Ref.#46) NEWARK - Old cell phones will be recycled into potential emergency lifelines and given free to domestic violence victims, senior citizens, livery cab drivers and other people throughout Newark who need to dial fast for emergency help. Female engineering students at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Newark , along with employees of Verizon Wireless are spearheading the effort to collect and recycle the old phones. The drive continues through December 21. The recycled phones will be reprogrammed by Verizon Wireless to dial 9-1-1 for emergency use only. “This is one way of the university giving back to the community,” said Talina Knox, an NJIT program assistant and advisor to the project. The NJIT students belong to the local chapter of the Society of Women Engineers. Old phones can be brought from 10 AM to 4 PM to the Murray Women’s Center, located on the second floor of the Hazell Student Center, at the intersection of New and Summit streets, Newark. For more information on the program, call Knox at 973-642-4671.
