Sports Update

NJIT has named Anthony Walker and Rich Spottswood assistant men's basketball coaches, head coach Jim Casciano announced.

Both coaches were assistants last year under Casciano at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Casciano was hired by NJIT in August following the resignation of Jim Catalano.

"I'm very fortunate to have Anthony Walker and Rich Spottswood join me here," said Casciano. "With them, I have continuity on my staff, since they have experience and familiarity with me and my system. Anthony recruits well and works well with perimeter players. Rich played for me, which helps both of us, plus he excels in the areas of conditioning and weight training."

Walker is the all-time assist leader and second all-time scorer at Division I Radford University. He graduated with a degree in interdisciplinary studies in 1998, and was the first player in school history to be invited to the Portsmouth (Va.) NBA Pre-Draft Camp. Walker's experience at King's was his first as a collegiate coach.

Spottswood played for Casciano at Valley Forge Military Junior College. He scored more than 1,000 points in two seasons for Valley Forge, averaging 22 points per game, and was an Eastern Pennsylvania All-Star selection. He completed his collegiate career with two injury-plagued seasons at the University of Mobile (Ala.), a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I school, where, in 1999, he earned a degree in health education.

Walker and Spottswood join Jeff Sonnema, who was retained from Catalano's staff, as men's basketball assistants.

"Jeff has been a major asset in accelerating my learning curve," said Casciano. "He is a graduate of NJIT, and he knows our returning players, the school, and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference very well. We have put together a solid, hard-working staff that I have tremendous confidence in."

Soccer Teams Suffer Losses

Both NJIT men's and women's soccer teams lost Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matches, Saturday, Oct. 20, at Wilmington (Del.) College. The Wildcat women defeated NJIT, 7-2, and the Highlanders men's team was defeated, 2-0.

The women's team trailed, 2-1, at halftime, but then allowed three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half. Cathy Wasko and Jessi Wilkinson scored for NJIT. Katie Quigley had four goals and an assist to lead Wilmington.

Wilmington's Winner Okorie scored a goal in each half of the men's game. Goalkeeper Jason Manzi made nine saves for the Highlanders. The loss denies the Highlanders (3-5 in CACC play) any chance at a winning season, unless early-season postponements are rescheduled.

Junior Christopher Wilson, a transfer from Essex County College, leads NJIT with seven goals for 14 points. Sophomore Cherno Cham has a team-high six assists.

Tennis Coach Resigns

The head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at NJIT has resigned, senior athletics administrator Lenny Kaplan said.

Shelly Licorish was on the job for just under one year, posting an 0-2 record with the NJIT women's team and an 0-5 mark with the men in the spring 2001 season. She cited increased demands from her full-time position as a regional director for the United States Tennis Association as her main reason for stepping down.
