Geoenvironmental Engineering Lab Receives State Certification

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has certified NJIT's Geoenvironmental Engineering Laboratory, housed in the department of civil and environmental engineering.

"A New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection certified lab demonstrates that the lab has the facility and chemists to perform certain chemical analyses to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection quality assurance and quality control requirements," said Hsin-Neng Hsieh, professor of civil and environmental engineering and lab director.

Geoenvironmental engineering is an emerging field that unites geotechnical engineering with chemistry and biology to seek new solutions for the future of the environment. NJIT, with funding from the National Science Foundation, established the $3 million facility in 1995. The laboratory serves as a prototype for experimental facilities to be developed nationwide.

The Geoenvironmental Engineering Laboratory offers industry access to researchers, students and state-of-the-art facilities. Access to the laboratory can range from short-term, such as testing of a substance, to close affiliation as a laboratory associate or through the geoenvironmental laboratories advisory board.

Interdisciplinary faculty bring broad research and industrial expertise to bear in the laboratory, the classroom and in collaboration with partners from industry and the public sector.
