NJIT To Serve As State Coordinator For ASCE Competition

Students in grades K-12 will have the opportunity to build a bridge toward a career in civil engineering when the United States Military Academy at West Point holds a bridge design contest as part of its bicentennial celebration. The American Society of Civil Engineers, New Jersey Section has designated NJIT as official state coordinator for this contest, which integrates critical thinking, problem solving and physical science concepts.

To promote a better understanding of bridge design and participation in the West Point Bridge Design Contest, NJIT faculty will present a half-day seminar for high school math and science teachers to discuss basic bridge nomenclature and how computers are used in its design. The seminar will include hands-on use of the contest version of the West Point Bridge Design Program.

Presentations will include:

  • What is engineering design?
  • Basic bridge nomenclature.
  • Kinds of bridges.
  • An update on N.J. bridges.
  • How bridges carry loads.
  • Testing bridges.
  • Bridge projects for the classroom.
  • Using the West Point Bridge Program.

Seminar registration is required by Nov. 16. Confirmation will be mailed with an agenda, campus map and directions. Parking and lunch will be provided.

A $30 fee is required. Make checks payable to NJIT and indicate the seminar campus location of choice: Dec. 4, NJIT, Newark; or Dec. 11, NJIT, Mount. Laurel.
