Albert Dorman Honors College Expands to Offer
Students a New Experience
Expansion funded by a $100,000 grant from Lucent Technologies

Information technology has been identified as one of the four economic growth areas of the State of
New Jersey, the home of many of the world's most important communications, networking and other information
technology companies, led by Lucent Technologies. New Jersey Institute of Technology offers a wide array
of computing-related programs, including computer engineering, computer science, information systems,
information technology and human computer interaction.
The Undergraduate Research Experience in Computing, funded by Lucent Technologies program, will facilitate
the implementation of a research thread across the honors curricula in computing, culminating with either
a research capstone in the form of a thesis or a hands-on experience in conjunction with an ongoing
industry project. The funding will create a computing laboratory that will be the center of activity
for the Albert Dorman Honors College Undergraduate
Research Experience in Computing.
Funds from this project will be targeted to provide as the hardware, software and the communications
infrastructure necessary for the implementation of a research experience laboratory for information
technology students. The Lucent Technologies award augments the NJ I-TOWER project, a $2.5 million grant
from the NJ Commission on Higher Education for the development of excellence in the information technology
workforce, as well as other NJIT research initiatives.
The research experience project's goal is to create a learning laboratory, accessible to all computing
students in the Albert Dorman Honors College and others students interested in an honors research
experience during their last year of study. Faculty affiliated with the College of Computing Sciences
will serve as mentors to graduating students while they conduct timely research and development. The
projects will help increase the talent pool by ensuring that research is the culminating curricular
experience at NJIT.
Fadi Deek and Robert Friedman serve as co-principal investigators and will provide oversight and direction
to students and faculty. Deek, the associate dean of the College of Computing Sciences and an associate
professor of information systems, will take the lead in the area of curricular development. Deek is also
project director for NJ I-TOWER. His current research includes learning technologies, software
engineering, programming environments, problem solving / cognition / learning theory, and computer science
education. Friedman, research professor in the Information Technology Program, will oversee the area of
technology development and research project administration. His current research includes computer
mediated communication systems, asynchronous learning systems design, multimedia technologies, and
communication theory.
The aim of this project is consistent with Lucent's needs, which include a demand for an excellent and
sufficient technology workforce. Developing and retaining a high quality, high-tech workforce has been a
complementary interest and goal of both NJIT and Lucent Technologies, which has the most NJIT students in
their employ than any of the 51 colleges in the area. The project will increase the numbers and quality of
this highly desirable labor force.
