Hazardous Substance Research Center (HSRC) Meets with EPA in Washington, D.C.![]() (Fred Ellerbusch, EPA Chief Whitman, Prof. Piero Armenante at the HSRC Directors meeting in Washington, D.C., Nov. 19, 2001) In November, Prof. Piero Armenante (Chem. Eng.), director of the Northeast Hazardous Substance Research Center (NHSRC), Fred Ellerbusch, NHSRC training/technology transfer director, and Bill Librizzi, retired NHSRC director of technical outreach services for communities, recently attended a meeting of the Hazardous Substance Research Centers' Directors, in Washington, D.C. The meeting, held at the Cosmos Club, was organized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition to the directors of the existing Hazardous Substance Research Centers (HSRCs) and the newly awarded HSRCs II many EPA officials attended the meeting, including the former New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman, current EPA Administrator. After addressing the audience, EPA Chief Whitman presented the representatives of each new HSRC II with the $900,000 first-year award. The Governor then socialized with the representatives of the new and current HSRCs, and posed for pictures. NJIT is the leading institute of the current seven-university consortium constituting NHSRC. NJIT is also one of five universities in the consortium forming the new HSRC II for EPA Regions 1, 2 and 3, together with Johns Hopkins (as the lead institution), University of Maryland, Morgan State University, and University of Connecticut. In addition, NJIT is in charge of the outreach component of the new HSRC II for EPA Region 2 (comprising New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), to provide help to local communities on environmental issues.back to top| Home` |
