TLT Workshop coming in January

The Teaching, Learning and Technology group is sponsoring the Second Annual January Faculty Institute to provide the strategies, tools and techniques to use technology in teaching. This three-day event will offer a strong foundation for the use of technology in traditional classes, distance learning and hybrid courses. Participants will be offered sessions in pedagogical issues and new technologies. Part of the success of the previous institutes has been that faculty have the opportunity to work hands-on with new software and are given licensed copies of the software that they use. There will also be hardware prizes distributed at the end of the three days. This institute is offered at no charge to faculty at NJIT, however, there is limited registration required. To register for the January 8, 9, 10 event go to http://www.njit.edu/tlt/January1/jan1reg.htm

REACTIONS TO END-OF-SEMESTER STRESSES

Fall 2001 has been an especially stressful semester for students, faculty and staff. There are many stresses which are typical of this time of year: final exams, end-of-year projects, financial and family obligations of the holiday season, loneliness for those separated from their families. In addition, many of us have not fully recovered from the shock of the September 11 terrorist attacks, or the subsequent military action and anthrax incidents. Some students have missed classes for a number of reasons associated with these events, including short-term calls to military duty (up to four weeks).

The impact of significant stressors such as these may include cognitive, emotional and physiological effects such as impaired memory and concentration, irritability, anxiety and depression, fatigue and insomnia. Many of these symptoms may be the result of the intense biochemical reaction that can occur in relation to stress and trauma. On our own campus, Health Services is seeing an unusually large number of students seeking medical assistance for insomnia and chronic headaches this semester. Thus, it is important that we be aware of the impact of stress and trauma and sensitive to these dynamics in ourselves and others within the NJIT community.

For more information on stress, trauma, and coping strategies, please visit Counseling Center "Coping with Stress and Trauma" page at . Currently, this is accessible only to users of Microsoft Word. It will be converted to html in early January.

New NJIT Fitness Club

The NJIT division of physical education and athletics announces the formation of a faculty/staff Fitness Club. According to Duane Felczak, assistant director of physical education, the purpose of the club is to help stimulate the faculty and staff to participate in various types of exercise on an informal basis. The goal is to encourage interaction between people of similar interests who enjoy working out at the same time.

The club will be organized into the following divisions: The Sunshine Club (7-9 a.m.), The Nooners (11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) and The Happy Hour Club (4:30 - 6:30 p.m.).

Interested individuals must register with Felczak in his office on the third floor of the athletic center, or via e-mail (felczak@adm.njit.edu). Those who have not been steady users of the fitness center over the past year must keep an exercise log using the charts available in the fitness center.

After a period of working out for two to three times a week over six weeks, members will be awarded a free club T-shirt.

The club opening is January 2, 2002

ITMS TO BEGIN ON-LINE EQUIPMENT REQUESTS FOR SPRING 2002 SEMESTER

Instructional Technology and Media Services has developed a on line request form for all of your instructional equipment needs.

Beginning January 2nd, this will be the only method available to reserve audiovisual equipment for use in the classroom. This on-line request system will enable instructors to request equipment for delivery to the classroom, or to reserve equipment for pickup at our office in GITC 0300.

To access this page, please link to http://itms-request.njit.edu/

In order to login to the equipment request system, you must have a valid UCID and password. This on-line request system pulls all user information from your NJIT Directory Entry including your name, department, official phone number, phone number, and preferred e-mail address. (Note: Many other systems on campus will also be relying on the information in your UCID directory entry. Therefore, it is very important that you review this information and ensure that it is up-to-date and accurate).

The ITMS equipment request web page will automatically send you a confirmation e-mail to the preferred e-mail address listed in your directory entry. If you do not check that e-mail address, we would encourage you to configure mail forwarding at http://mailhost.njit.edu/mail.html , so you may receive e-mail confirmations or other correspondence from ITMS as well as others at NJIT.

For further information on your UCID and updating your directory information, please go to http://directory.njit.edu/ or contact the CSD Help Desk at (973) 596- 2900.
