To the Editor:

Many NJIT students, faculty, and staff use New Jersey Transit to commute each day. We are helping our community by not polluting the air by using automobiles. NJIT has a very big parking problem. Those who commute by public transportation obviously do not contribute to this problem.

New Jersey Transit is asking for a 10% fare increase. I certainly understand that after 10 years NJ Transit is entitled to a fare increase, but people who live and work in Newark are being hit with a triple increase.

1. The round trip excursion fare (except for weekends) is being eliminated.

2. The fare to and from Penn Station is being raised to match the fare to Broad Street, Newark.

3. The 10% increase.

Thus the round trip fare is being raised from $3.50 to $6.60. Since the WTC PATH station will be closed for at least two years, more commuters are dependant on NJ Transit. There may be many low income people in Newark who may not be able to afford this increase. Government is encouraging people to use mass transit. A small increase is justified but Newark commuters are hit with a "triple whammy".

You can do something about this by attending public hearings on Wednesday January 2nd at 8 PM.

  • Newark: New Jersey Transit Corporation Board Room, One Penn Plaza East
  • Paramus: Paramus Catholic High School Auditorium, 425 Paramus Road
  • Freehold: Freehold Borough Hall Council Room - 2nd Floor, 51 W. Main Street
  • Trenton: NJ Department of Transportation Multi-Purpose Room, 1035 Parkway Avenue
  • Camden: Walter Rand Transportation Center Terminal Lobby, 100 Broadway
  • Atlantic City: Atlantic County Office Building Auditorium, 1333 Atlantic Avenue

The public can also submit comments via e-mail to transitfares@njtransit.com. Written comments may be sent to:

Public Hearing Office - Fare Proposal Comments

Newark, NJ 07105

All comments must be received by midnight, January 2, 2002.
