MEN’S BASKETBALL (3-6): The New Jersey Institute of Technology men’s basketball team was five seconds away from making an early statement to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference when a Caldwell College shot sent the Highlanders to a 57-56 defeat on Thursday night.

NJIT (3-2 CACC) had already defeated Felician College, 77-69, three days earlier, and, on the day of the Caldwell game, received a forfeit victory over Wilmington (Del.) College due to the Wildcats using an ineligible player when they defeated the Highlanders on Dec. 1. On Thursday, they erased an 11-point second half deficit against the top-rated team in the CACC’s preseason poll, only to suffer their third victory of two points or less on the young season.

"If you look at our wins and losses, sure we’re disappointed to be 3-6," said first-year head coach Jim Casciano. "But if you look closely, we could very easily be 7-2 or 6-3. We’ve lost four games by a total of nine points. But part of development is learning how to win.

"The conference appears to be balanced and wide-open. We’ve proven we can be competitive, now we must prove we can win."

After a home game against league foe University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Saturday, the Highlanders go on a two-game Florida swing. NJIT will be entertained by Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale on December 29 and Barry University in Miami Shores the next day.

"Trips like these are good for a team to spend quality time together," Casciano said. "It allows us to see teams from a different region and enjoy the climate. But we have two difficult games and we can’t forget what we’re there for."

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (4-5): The NJIT women’s basketball team matched its victory total for all of last season with its 64-51 triumph over Georgian Court College on Saturday. The Highlanders, who improved to 3-3 in CACC play, were 4-23 in 2000-01.

NJIT’s defense keyed Saturday’s victory. The Highlanders held GCC to 20 first-half points, and the Lions shot 17 percent from the field in the opening period. When Georgian Court trimmed a 13 point lead down to two late in the second half, junior SchrKya Massey (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made three consecutive steals, all of which led to NJIT baskets. The Highlanders had 12 steals on the game while limiting GCC to 23-percent shooting.

Massey increased her CACC-leading steals average to 4.33 last week, also picking up six in a December 10 loss at Caldwell. She also tops the Highlanders in scoring (18.4 ppg) and assists (3.6 pg).

MEN’S SWIMMING (0-5): The Highlanders lost at William Paterson College, 92-48, on Wednesday despite two individual victories from freshman Don Sidun (Scotch Plains, NJ/Wardlaw Hartridge).

MEN’S BASKETBALL-12/13/01

The NJIT men's basketball team lost at Caldwell College, 57-56, on Thursday night. Caldwell's Tre Gardener made a runner in the lane with 5.0 seconds left in the game for the final margin.

The Highlanders (3-6, 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) trailed by double digits in each half, but closed to within 29-25 at halftime, and took a 56-55 lead on two Demond Cowins free throws with 45 seconds remaining. After a Cougar turnover, NJIT missed the front end of a one-and-one, setting up Gardener's heroics.

NJIT hosts USP on December 22 at 2 p.m.
