Sports NotesDecember 15, 2001 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DEFENSE CARRIES NJIT PAST LIONS, 64-51 South Orange’s Massey Leads Highlanders With 21 Points, Six Steals The New Jersey Institute of Technology women’s basketball team held visiting Georgian Court College to 23.3-percent shooting from the field in its 64-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Entwisle Gym on Saturday afternoon. NJIT (4-5, 3-3), which snapped a three-game losing streak, raced out to a 31-20 halftime lead, keeping the Lions to just 17 percent shooting in the opening period. In the second half, Georgian Court three times cut the deficit to two points, the last occasion on a Lauren Meyer (Toms River, NJ) lay-up at the 7:35 mark. From there, the Highlanders embarked on a 13-4 spurt to take a 60-47 lead with 2:05 remaining. Junior SchrKya Massey (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) keyed the run with three consecutive steals, all of which NJIT converted into baskets. Massey led four Highlander double-figure scorers with 21 points and six steals, both game highs. Lindsey Reggo (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) had 11 points and seven rebounds for NJIT. Alexis Jankowski (Middletown, NJ) paced Georgian Court (3-4, 1-4) with 15 points and nine boards. December 12, 2001 MEN'S SWIMMING The NJIT men's swim team fell to 0-5 on the season with a 92-48 loss to William Paterson College on Wednesday night in Wayne. The Highlanders won four individual events, including two by freshman Don Sidun. December 10, 2001 MEN'S BASKETBALL The NJIT men's basketball team recovered from an 13-point first-half deficit to post a 77-74 victory over host Felician College on Monday night at Job Gym. The Highlanders (2-6, 2-2 CACC) went on an 8-0 run over the final two minutes of the first half to close to 38-33 heading into the lockerroom. They got even at the 13:06 mark, but could build a lead of no more than two points until Randle DeFalco's three-pointer gave them a 68-63 edge with 3:01 to play. NJIT stayed ahead the rest of the way by making eight of 10 free throws. Mars Mellish had 17 points and Demond Cowins 14 points and 12 rebounds. December 13, 2001 NJIT GAINS FORFEIT VICTORY The NJIT men's basketball team was awarded a forfeit victory today when it was determined that Wilmington (Del.) College used an ineligible player in its 71-60 victory over the Highlanders on December 1 in New Castle, Delaware. Wilmington was 3-3 at the time of the discovery that one of its players had exhausted his athletic eligibility. The Wildcats were forced to forfeit victories over USP, NJIT and Goldey-Beacom. The Highlanders' record improved to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play heading into tonight's game at Caldwell College. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL The NJIT women's basketball team suffered its third consecutive loss on Monday night, falling to host Caldwell College, 80-60. Junior SchrKya Massey led all scorers with 26 points. Freshman Selena Kershaw added 14 points and 10 rebounds. NJIT hosts Georgian Court College on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Fleisher Athletic Center. back to top| Home |
