2008 Commencement Information for Honored Guests
Commencement Ceremony
The University Commencement Ceremony for New Jersey Institute of Technology will be held on Saturday May 17, 2008 at the Prudential Center in Downtown Newark. The processional will start promptly at 8:45 am. The formal ceremony will start at about 9:00 am and is expected to last approximately 3 hours. During the ceremony, honorary doctoral degrees and earned doctoral master’s and bachelor’s degrees will be conferred on the Class of 2008
If you or any of your guests have special needs, please contact the Office of Special Events by May 9, 2008 via email. Outside of the Arena wheelchairs will not be available. Once inside the Arena, a wheelchair can be provided.

Where do I go and how do I get there?
The ceremony takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. You may click on the above link to go the Prudential Center website which gives directions on how to get there as well as a map of the complex. Please be mindful that you need to arrive before 8:00 am and allow some extra time for the heavy traffic that is normal for that time in the area.
Where do I park at the Prudential Center?
Parking is available for a charge at commercial lots near the Prudential Center (look here for a map). As an honored guest, you will receive in the mail a special parking pass that will permit you to park in the “VIP Parking Area”, which is accessed via Devils Way, off Lafayette between Mulberry Street and Broad Street. If you do not receive the pass by May 1, contact the Office of Special Events at the e-mail above.
Where do I go after parking?
You should enter the Center through the Lafayette Street Security Entrance located on the south side of the Prudential Center at the corner of Devils Way and Lafayette. Once inside, you will need to show your backstage pass in order to proceed to the lower level staging area. At this point, you will be directed to the appropriate room by a staff member. It is imperative that you arrive inside the Arena NO LATER THAN 8:00 A.M. This will allow time for you to don academic attire, to meet and mingle with the other honorees and with the university dignitaries, to have publicity photos taken, to partake of some refreshments, and to line up for the academic processional that will, for the stage party, start promptly at 8:55 am.
How many guests can I bring, and where do they sit?
As many guests as you like are welcome to attend the ceremony; tickets are not required to do so. However, we ask that you only bring at most one guest with you into the staging area. This guest will be shown to a reserved seating area in the stands at the time of the lineup. Any other guests should go directly to that area upon entering the Arena by asking one of the staff members on duty for assistance.
When and where can I get my cap and gown?
If you have your own academic attire, please feel free to bring it and wear it. If that is not the case, we will provide attire for you. You should have received a request for size information (height, weight, cap size) in order to order the appropriate sizes. Please provide this information by mid-April to the e-mail above. When you arrive in the staging area, the attire will then be waiting for you.
How can I inform the media of my honor?
The NJIT Director of Public Relations and her staff will be coordinating publicity for Commencement, and will be pleased to help with any special requests that you may have. They will also arrange for photographers.
Are there any other events associated with this honor?
Honorary degree recipients will have a dinner reception the evening before; information will be sent to them shortly. Alumni from the Class of 1958 (and earlier) will have a luncheon following the ceremony; again details will be sent to them shortly.

There are several hotels near Prudential Center and the Newark Area. NJIT does not have any special arrangements with any of them. They include, among others:
