Meagan Hopper
Meagan Hopper is a junior majoring in architecture. She lives on campus but grew up in Vernon, NJ, a town that she says has more cows than people.

Favorite bands:
Most punk, rock or alternative bands.

On my iPod:
Right now it’s Lacuna Coil, the Matches, Theatre of Tragedy, Toby Keith and Dropkick Murphies.

Why NJIT?
I came here on many field trips in high school and always enjoyed the activities, atmosphere and people of the school. Then I participated in the summer exploration in architecture. I got to stay overnight at the school and have a closer look at the curriculum. After that I brought my parents for an open house and we visited a few other schools. In the end, I just felt that here, people actually cared about me and my future and that I wasn't going to just be another number.

Why architecture?
Well, originally my mom wanted me to go into engineering, but I really wanted to do art, so it was a compromise. I recently realized I’d really rather go into Industrial Design, so now I'm going through architecture to get a good design background.

Favorite class:
It’s a marketing class I had with Professor Nathan Himelstein. I enjoyed learning how people interact with the world around them and what influences their decisions. I can use everything I learned in that class to help me with my designs. Plus, Professor Himelstein was an excellent teacher, one of the best I've ever had.

What’s best at NJIT?
I love that there are fewer women than men students on this campus. It provides so many opportunities for females. They are always looking for women to join different clubs; there are many scholarships for women, and we are encouraged to get involved in every aspect of campus and college life.

Clubs and activities:
I’m the general manager of the university’s radio station, WJTB. I also work in the campus center and in web services. I’m a former member of the women’s swim team and the art society. I tend to participate in almost every activity on campus. My favorite is booking bands to play at NJIT. Every Thursday, bands play in our pub.

Student Ambassador:
I joined the student ambassadors as soon as I got to NJIT. This is my third year now as an ambassador and I’m a trainer, which means I train other NJIT students to become ambassadors. I like having the opportunity to share my knowledge about the school and my enthusiasm for the unique opportunities that the university provides. I love finding a way to connect with each and every person who comes in for a campus tour. I want everyone to feel like there’s at least one person on the campus who really cares about them and truly wants them to find the college that is right for them.

Favorite on-campus spots:
I love going up to the top of the campus center and out on the terrace. It’s a place where you can feel peaceful and almost see the stars. Coming from a town with more cows than people, and having four acres of woods in my backyard, peacefulness is something I really love.

Career goal:
Ideally, I'd LOVE to design toys for Fisher Price, the classic toy company. I still act like a little kid, and I have so much fun designing things, so I think this would be the perfect job for me. It also takes a certain person to be able to think along the lines of a child. But given my childlike enthusiasm for life, for toys and for design, I can definitely pull that off.
