As of June 30, 2009, NJIT has successfully completed the Highlanders Athletics Campaign at $5.4 million of the $5 million dollar goal. The campaign raised funds necessary to upgrade selected athletic facilities and increase the amount of money available for athletic scholarships. The goal of the Highlanders Athletics Campaign was to raise $5 million: $3 million for athletic facilities, $1.5 million for athletic scholarships and $500,000 for program support.
Upgrading NJIT's athletics program has been a priority for President Robert A. Altenkirch since he came to the university in 2002. Over the past two years, NJIT has upgraded and strengthened its athletics program in areas such as NCAA compliance, sports sponsorship, schedule strength and competitiveness in many sports. The NCAA has given NJIT the go-ahead to enter year three of reclassifying to Division I. If things continue to go as planned, all NJIT sports will achieve full Division I status and postseason championship eligibility in 2009-10.
Men's soccer was the first NJIT program to make the move to Division I, starting in 2003. In 2004, they played their first Division I-only schedule and achieved full championship-eligible status in 2005. Women's soccer followed a corresponding track, starting in 2005, playing a Division I schedule in 2006 and achieving full status in 2007.
The $5 million Highlanders Athletics Campaign will enable New Jersey Institute of Technology to elevate its entire intercollegiate athletics program by ensuring that the necessary facilities, scholarships and program support are in place. This transformational endeavor will support three key areas for Highlanders athletics:
Facilities---$3,000,000
Scholarships---$1,500,000
Program Support---$500,000
Within these three areas, various opportunities exist for commemorative and honorary naming gifts.
While achieving academic excellence is of primary importance, students at NJIT are also encouraged to participate in activities outside the classroom that enrich their university experience. Many of them choose to don a Highlanders uniform and pursue excellence in athletics on the playing fields and courts of New Jersey Institute of Technology.
