What Can I Do Green With a Major In

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering

Environmental engineers are essential participants in the planning, design and construction of waste water and potable water treatment plants, solid waste disposal systems, site remediation and emission control measures, and other similar projects. In today’s green market, major corporations, government agencies, private consulting and construction firms, and universities are just some of the organizations that employ environmental engineers.

Students who graduate from the Geoscience program are capable of solving a wide spectrum of problems related to engineering, geology and the environment. Most civil engineering projects involve a thorough analysis of site geology to arrive at satisfactory design solutions. In recent years, the importance of geologic factors in design has intensified, as projects require a high level of environmental protection and restoration. Solving problems of this nature is complex, and requires considerable interaction between the fields of civil engineering and geoscience. Students can find employment as a geoscience engineer or work in the allied fields of civil engineering, environmental engineering, and geology.

Materials Science and Engineering is concerned with the relation between the structure and properties of materials, factors which control the internal structure, and processes for altering the structure and properties. It is a natural progression to apply material science principles to new advances in the built environment and retrofitting and updating older resources.
