Hess has given nearly $500,000 in funding for various programs over the years. This includes the Amerada Hess Corporate Merit Award scholarship through the university’s Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering and a pre-college program to assist minorities interested in entering the field of engineering. Hess has also been a long-time supporter of other pre-college programs that help elementary-, middle- and high-school students prepare for a university education. In addition, Hess provides funding for the university’s Educational Opportunity Program scholarships that serve economically and educationally disadvantaged students, mostly minorities and women. Hess also recently began supporting NJIT’s College of Computing Sciences.
Hess’ assistance extends beyond financial contributions to include hands-on involvement. Hess Vice President and Chief Information Officer Jeff Steinhorn has served on the Advisory Board for the College of Computing Sciences and Walter Vertreace, director of Equal Employment Opportunity, has served on the Advisory Board for the Center for Pre-College Programs. Hess actively recruits NJIT graduates through the university’s Office of Career Development Services. Approximately 20 alumni are employed by Hess.
