Student Disability Services

Students with disabilities, like all students at NJIT, face a number of challenges in completion of a degree. Students with disabilities, however, may have to cope with a variety of other challenges including: the need for special testing arrangements, parking/accessibility issues, and obtaining other support services such as interpreters, real time captioning, note-takers, books on tape, etc. In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, New Jersey Institute of Technology is committed to making students with disabilities full participants in its academic and other programs, services and activities through the provision of reasonable accommodations to students with documented disabilities. The Coordinator of Student Disability Services will coordinate the provision of appropriate accommodations and/or academic adjustments on a case-by-case basis for students with disabilities who identify themselves, provide adequate documentation of their disability and need for accommodation, request services and complete appropriate forms. Appropriate accommodations are provided at no cost to the student. Information on some of the guidelines and procedures required to obtain disability services are listed below. General Information

The goal of Student Disability Services is to work in partnership with the faculty and the student to provide accommodations and supportive services to qualified students with disabilities. A student with a disability is someone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. A person is considered to have a disability if she/he has the disability, has a record of the disability, or is regarded as having the disability. New Jersey Institute of Technology will make a “good faith” effort to provide appropriate accommodations to individuals with documented disabilities on a case-by-case basis. Accommodations are based on the documented needs of the individual as well as the nature of the course or program and institutional resources. The institution does not, however, provide personal devices, such as wheelchairs; individually prescribed devices, such as hearing aids; or services of a personal nature.

What Types of Services Are Provided

Support services are provided on an individual basis and the types of services provided depend on the student's documented needs. Accommodations and supportive services may include:

  • Assistive Listening Devices

  • Parking
  • Real-time Captioning
  • Sign Language Interpreters
  • Taped Textbooks
  • Testing Accommodations

All of the services provided are "support" services; students with disabilities are fully integrated into the NJIT community. They are admitted on the basis of NJIT standard requirements and are evaluated on the same academic standard as their peers.

How Does a Student with a Disability Obtain Services

In order to obtain these services, students must complete a number of steps which include: self-identification as a person with a disability; provision of documentation of disability from an appropriate, qualified professional; meeting with the Coordinator of Student Disability Services; completion of appropriate forms, as requested, in a timely manner (e.g. Consent for Disability Services Form, Accommodation Request Form);  maintaining contact with Student Disability Services to provide information, as needed, in a timely manner regarding ongoing accommodation needs, etc.

Self Identification

It is the responsibility of the person with a disability to identify himself/herself and request appropriate accommodations. Students currently attending NJIT or accepted to NJIT can accomplish this by scheduling an appointment with the Coordinator of Student Disability Services located in the NJIT Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (C-CAPS). Self-identification initiates the process for receiving accommodations for disability.

Documentation

  1. New Jersey Institute of Technology is dedicated to providing appropriate accommodations to students with documented disabilities. In order to obtain accommodations, the student must provide documentation of disability that describes the current impact of the disability as it relates to the accommodations that will be requested.

  2. All contact information and documentation received are kept in separate, confidential files within C-CAPS. No information is released without the express, usually written, consent of the student, except under certain conditions outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, or in accordance with other legal mandates.

  3. The provision of all accommodations is based upon the indication that the accommodation or aid is appropriate to the needs and capabilities of the student. It is therefore in the student’s best interest to provide recent and appropriate documentation relevant to the college-level learning environment. Generally, it is best that the documentation be no more than three years old for a student who graduated from high school just prior to applying for services and accommodations or no more than five years old for other students. Exceptions can be made, on a case-by-case basis, for disabilities that are known to be stable throughout the individual’s life.

  4. A qualified professional trained to diagnose and treat the impairment leading to the disability who is not a family member of the student must prepare the documentation. It must not be altered. It should be typed or word-processed and printed on the letterhead of either the practitioner or the agency housing the profession’s practice.

  5. Documentation should include (if appropriate):
    1. A diagnostic statement identifying the disability, date of the current diagnostic evaluation, and the date of the original diagnosis.
    2. A description of the diagnostic criteria and or diagnostic test(s) used and a report on the findings of the testing including test scores.
    3. A description of the current level of functioning and/or the functional impact of the disability on a major life activity or activities.
    4. Treatments, medications, assistive devices/services currently prescribed or in use.
    5. Specific recommendations of accommodations or academic adjustments considered appropriate at the college level with supporting test results.
    6. A description of the expected progression or stability of the impact of the disability over time.

  6. In addition to the above guidelines, recommendations for accommodations, adaptive devices, assistive devices and services, compensatory strategies and/or collateral support services will also be considered when included in documentation. The student should be aware, however, that accommodations provided in other environments may or may not be appropriate at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Documentation can be sent to:

Request for Services, Academic Adjustments and Other Accommodations

  1. Once the student has self-identified, an interview should be scheduled with the Coordinator of Student Disability Services. During this interview, procedures for reasonable accommodations are discussed, services are explained, student’s rights and responsibilities are reviewed and the Consent for Disability Services information release form, and other forms, as appropriate, are completed. Appropriate forms must be completed and signed by the person requesting services to receive services.

  2. Following the initial interview, each semester, the student must contact the Coordinator of Student Disability Services to provide information on accommodations requested for the semester and faculty members or others she/he wish to be contacted regarding accommodations. In addition, each semester for which the student desires accommodations, the student must complete all appropriate forms to receive accommodations. Requests for specific accommodations, academic adjustments and other services must be made in a reasonable time frame. This will ensure that arrangements can be made to provide the accommodations or services.

  3. The Coordinator of Student Disability Services will approve accommodations for each semester based on documented need(s). An approved accommodation will not be provided if it is determined that it jeopardizes the integrity of a particular course. Alternatives can be discussed with the Coordinator of Student Disability Services, the faculty teaching the course and/or the Department Chairperson or appropriate Dean. New Jersey Institute of Technology makes every effort to accommodate students with documented disabilities. Students, however, must meet all academic requirements of their courses and programs.
