First Year Students

For Parents

While your incoming student goes through the NJIT orientation called, First Year Connections, you will be invited to attend a concurrent program for parents and family members called Parent Connections. This program will provide you with valuable information to support your student while attending NJIT and help them make the transition to being an independent and responsible adult. Parent Connections is a one-day program starting June 3 through June 7. Below you will find a tentative schedule of program sessions to attend, which is subject to change.

Welcome & Introduction

Parenting College Students

Parent Workshops (Multiple sessions throughout the day):

  • BURSARS OFFICE & FINANCIAL AID OFFICE

At the Financial Aid and Bursar session, you will learn how to access your son or daughter’s bill as well as become

familiar with the available payment plans. Financial Aid will review the types of aid available to pay down your bill and

the critical deadlines to receive the maximum in aid.

  • OFFICE OF RESIDENCE LIFE: "Living on Campus and the New Warren Street Village"

This workshop will be directed towards current families with

students living on campus as well as families considering campus housing for the future. We will share the highlights of

the Warren Street Village that features the Dorman Residential College Residence and Greek Organization housing.

  • CENTER FOR ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL ENRICHMENT (CAPE)

This session will provide an overview of factors related to student success focusing primarily on motivation, discipline,

and problem solving skills. This session will also provide a brief overview of the academic resources available on

campus.

  • CENTER FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

This workshop will discuss some of the various concerns that your student may be experiencing while adjusting to

college life at NJIT, and will offer suggestions and resources to assist them with their transition to college.

  • CAREER DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

Parents know the effort it takes for their child to succeed academically. At the end of four years, the reward is a hard-

earned, well deserved bachelor’s degree. Wouldn’t you like to know that your new graduate will be prepared for the

job search and ready to begin a career, in addition to acquiring that new degree? Please join us for an information

session for parents and guardians so that you will be familiar with the array of services and programs provided by Career

Development Services.

  • CENTER FOR COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES: “Parent Roles in Helping with Stress and Personal Growth”

The college years are a time for tremendous growth for

students as well as their parents. However, they also can be quite stressful for both. In this workshop we will discuss the

stressors that students often experience, coping strategies for parents and tips for helping your child deal with the stress of

college.
