Parent Connections Frequently Asked Questions

Do most parents/guardians attend Parent Connections?

Approximately 1,000 parents attended orientation last summer. The choice of whether or not to attend Parents Connections depends on each parent or guardian. Parents and guardians of incoming first year students are strongly encouraged to attend. This is certainly one of the first steps in showing support for your student.

As a parent/guardian, what will I be doing during Parent Orientation?

You will have a chance to gain your own introductions to campus life, as well as the opportunity to meet representatives of various student support departments. You will also learn about the general academic requirements and policies, course placement and NJIT’s advising system. You will also have an opportunity to meet key campus staff members who support first year students, and become familiar with student services and facilities, food service plans, financial aid, career planning and student activities.

What does the cost cover for Parent Connections?

The cost of $35.00 for one parent/guardian and $50.00 for two parents/guardians covers the expense of breakfast, lunch, closing session, materials, program staff, give-a-ways, and the information sessions you will attend as part of Parent Connections. The cost is all-inclusive, non-negotiable and non-refundable

How do I register for Parent Connections?

Your student must register you for Parents Connections when they register for First Year Connections. Parents will receive a registration confirmation and instructions for payment.

Can I bring an additional guess to Parent Connections?

Yes, you can bring additional guests to Parent Connections. The cost is $25.00 per person. All additional guests must be identified on the registration. 

Can I make changes to my Parent Connections reservation?

Yes. To make changes to your registration please call or email Mr. Anthony Culpepper, Jr., Assistant to the Dean for Parent & Veteran  Services at 973-596-3469 or via email:  culpeppe@njit.edu .

Can I request a special meal due to my food allergies?

Yes, please indicate if a special meal is needed when registering. Unfortunately, will not be able to provide Kosher meals during First Year Connections and Parent Connections.

Do I have to attend all of the Parent Connections sessions?

Parents/guardians may choose which sessions they wish to attend, however, students are required to attend the entire program.

I live a long way from NJIT, is there any overnight lodging on campus?

Parents and students who live out of the area must make reservations to stay overnight on campus one week in advance. Parents and students must bring their own bedding, towels, etc… There is no charge for this service. For parents and students coming from out-of-the area and do not wish to bring bedding, towels, etc. the cost is $10.00. Please contact the Residence Life Office at 973-596-3039 to make reservations.

Are there any hotels near the university where I can make reservation?

Yes, there are area hotels where reservations can be made.

Can I meet with a representative from Financial Aid while I am on campus?

Yes, Financial Aid will provide individual sessions for parents as well as a general workshop which will address questions and concerns. 

Will I have the opportunity to talk with my student’s academic advisor?

During Parent Connections, the academic advisors are involved in advising sessions for the students attending First Year Connections. Parents will not be permitted to attend student sessions. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Academic Success Center (ASC) who will assist you with any questions. ASC can be contacted at 973-596-5598 or via email pals@njit.edu.

Where can I park while I am attending Parent Connections?

Parents and students are permitted to park in the NJIT Parking Deck. It is free, no permit is needed.

Will I have the opportunity to see my student throughout the day?

There will be a joint student/parent session at the beginning of the day and at  the end of the day during the closing session. Parent sessions will be separate and geared toward your role as a parent or guardian.

Will I be able to see a model room in the residence halls?

Yes, there will be an optional tour of a model room at the end of the program.

May I bring children to Parent Orientation?

Parents are encouraged not to bring children. Please be advised that there are no babysitting accommodations.

Are there disability Services/Accommodations during Parent Connection and First Year Connections?

If students or parent(s)/guardian(s) would like to request accommodations for disabilities, please note this on the Parent Connections registration from and contact Mr. Anthony Culpepper, Assistant to the Dean for Parent and Veteran Services at 973-596-3469.
