First Year Students

Placement Testing

The Center for First Year Students offers placement testing for all incoming freshmen, and for new transfer students who have not yet completed certain  General Undergraduate Requirements.

Placement testing is one of the most important steps in making sure that you are enrolled in courses that are academically appropriate for your level of preparation.

All students must take the mathematics computer based tests.  The Humanities/English department will utilize the writing and the essay sections of the SAT Reasoning Test TM to determine your English course placement. Otherwise, students who do not submit SAT or ACT scores will be required to take the computer based writing evaluation - Criterion® to determine English course placement. Additionally, students with majors that require either chemistry or computer science will also take the chemistry or computer sciences placement test.

Students are notified by mail of their assigned placement testing date.  To confirm your date click on: “confirm your date” under Placement Testing Confirmation for the appropriate term. If you have any questions please call (973) 596-8389.

Please Note: These tests are a critical component in determining your course placements. If you require accommodations for a disability during the placement exams, it is essential that you contact Dr. Phyllis Bolling at (973) 596-3414 to submit appropriate documentation of your disability and make arrangements for testing.

You can also view Sample Questions & Practice Problems to help you review for your test.

If you have placed into certain Pre-Calculus courses, NJIT offers you the ability to take those courses during the Summer before your first year. For more information on Summer Additive Credit Courses please click here.
