Help NJIT Help Others
We’re a New Jersey university and it shows. Since NJIT was founded in 1881 we’ve carried a strong connection to our Newark community and all of New Jersey. In fact, public service and economic development are central to our mission.
It is our collective commitment to a better future that drives us to continually expand Research and Development initiatives. Through these efforts, NJIT promotes economic growth, increases the knowledge that helps guide public policy, and develops new technologies that lead to significant breakthroughs in medicine, communication and industry. Our efforts in these areas depend heavily on external funding, and we hope you’ll join us in our mission to serve Newark, New Jersey, and the millions whose lives depend on advances in science and technology.
In addition, NJIT's outreach programs encourage students who otherwise might not consider, or who need support to successfully pursue, careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics:
- The Center for Pre-College Programs provides students in grades K-12 with a variety of on- and off-campus academic enrichment programs structured to improve their skills in math, science and other technology-related areas. In addition, the Center provides professional staff development for teachers, and works with schools to develop and implement curriculum in the classroom.
- The Consortium for Pre-College Education is a collaboration among the school districts of East Orange, Irvington and Newark, NJIT, Rutgers-Newark and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The Consortium's programs help students in grades 7-12 to improve their academic skills and their chances for high school graduation and entrance into college. Program components include academics, cultural and recreational activities, counseling and career orientation.
- The Educational Opportunity Program plays a critical role in the university's efforts to recruit and retain students who are underrepresented in engineering, science and related technological fields. The program provides economically and educationally disadvantaged students with financial assistance along with comprehensive support services designed to increase their opportunities for academic and professional success.
