NJIT benefits immensely from gifts of cash. Cash gifts are commonly unrestricted and immediately available. The university can thus use such gifts to help support its most pressing research project or its most vexing financial issue.  

Note that the Pension Protection Act gives tax incentives to those 70 and older to make charitable gifts to NJIT directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts — but only for a limited time.
