OPT Application Procedures

All NJIT international students interested in applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) are required to complete the OPT lesson and quiz in the OGI moodle course. The certificate showing that you successfully passed the quiz is required with your application.

Upcoming OPT Workshops

In order to obtain a new Form I-20 with OPT recommendation students must submit the following documents to the Office of Global Initiatives:

  • NJIT OPT Application
  • (NEW!) Certificate of having passed the quiz.
  • Form I-765, typed and completed. DO NOT USE OGI'S ADDRESS ON THE I-765. YOU MUST USE YOUR OWN ADDRESS TO HAVE USCIS MAIL AND YOUR EAD DELIVERED.
  • NJIT OPT processing fee of $200, payable to New Jersey Institute of Technology (money order only)

You must meet the minimum GPA requirements for graduation : 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students. Students who submit an OPT application that does not meet the minimum requirements will have the application returned to them. They can reapply after graduation as long as they do no depart the U.S. during their grace period.

OGI will contact the student by email as soon as the OPT I-20 has been issued, so the student may pick up their documents as soon as possible.

Students should review their OPT Request Form I-20 carefully to ensure that all information is correct prior to submitting their application to USCIS. Contact OGI immediately if there are any errors so they may be corrected as quickly as possible.
