Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Many international graduate students undertake Optional Practical Training (OPT).  OPT is employment related to your field of study.

It is authorized in variable increments, deducted from the maximum of one year of fill-time optional practical training, and is available in the following variations:

  1. Practical training during annual vacation.
  2. Practical training following completion of all course requirements for the degree except the thesis or equivalent, or
  3. Practical training while school is in session, provided that employment does not exceed 20 hours per week.

Some international graduate students in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) can get a 17-month extenstion to their OPT.

NJIT's Office of International Students and Faculty helps international graduate students answer questions about OPT.  See their website for more information.
