International Students Health Insurance Requirements

Health Insurance is mandatory for all registered F-1 and J-1 students as a condition of enrollment. In addition, The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) requires verification of all required immunizations prior to arrival on campus.

NJIT requires that international students have adequate medical and accident insurance coverage.

  • Mandatory student health insurance will be charged for all F-1 and J-1 students excluding sponsored students (see list below).
  • The mandatory student health insurance charge will include 1 week early arrival insurance for all new incoming F-1 and J-1 students to cover the International Student Orientation program.
  • NJIT’s Health Services Office reserves the right to verify benefits and coverage periods with each sponsor contacts and will list them on our website.

Approved Sponsors

Only students whose sponsors are listed below will be exempt from the mandatory fee.  All other F-1 and J-1 students will be charged for the Student Health Insurance coverage in the Fall and Spring semester.  You do not need to purchase any further insurance prior to attending NJIT.  All new incoming F-1 and J-1 students will be covered on the Aetna Student Plan one week prior to the start of school; sponsored students are exempt from this requirement.

If your sponsor does not appear on the list below and you have documentation that states the sponsor is providing health coverage, please submit a copy of your sponsorship contract to Ms. Lopez of the Bursar Office at mylopez@njit.edu no later than one week after school starts.
