THE CASE FOR SUPPORT

Albert Dorman Honors College began with a simple, yet challenging hypothesis.  If New Jersey Institute of Technology could offer a technology-rich, multidisciplinary environment to some of the nation's most talented and motivated undergraduate students, then these innovative and entrepreneurial NJIT graduates could take a leading role in shaping the 21st century global economy.

Today we celebrate the results of this educational experiment --- An Experiment that Works:
  • Albert Dorman Honors College has been a part of NJIT for 10 years as a college of the university.

  • Beginning with an enrollment of only 28, the Honors College today is populated by more than 500 academically accomplished students.

  • SAT scores of Dorman scholars are in the top 10 percent nationally with mathematics proficiency in the top two percent.

  • Dorman scholars are designing their own educational experiences by building on NJIT's rigorous curriculum and rich science and technology resources while partnering with highly-regarded research faculty and industry leaders to create real-world projects.

  • Dorman scholars have studied and researched such dynamic subjects as hybrid electric vehicles, communication devices for the blind and deaf, solar flares, traffic calming, fingerprint scanning, robotics in surgery, and computational chemistry.

  • Dorman scholars continue their studies at such prestigious graduate and professional schools as Columbia, Cornell, MIT, Rutgers Law, Seton Hall Law and, of course, NJIT.

  • Our students and graduates have secured placement at companies like Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies, GM, Honeywell, L'Oreal, Merrill Lynch, Motorola and Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals, among many others.

As Albert Dorman himself has said, "The overriding need in industry, in academia, and in government is for outstanding, technically-trained individuals who can integrate various disciplines and differing approaches."  Albert Dorman Honors College has succeeded in producing individuals of this caliber.  However, the success of NJIT's "experiment" has resulted in an even greater demand for this type of customized undergraduate education.

NJIT is responding to this demand by initiating the Albert Dorman Honors College Scholarship Endowment Campaign.  This $20 million fundraising effort will focus on expanding the Honor College's enrollment by 100 students by providing the scholarship, facility, and programmatic funds necessary to compete with other leading institutions.

By supporting this unprecedented effort, alumni and friends will ensure that NJIT remains one of the nation's most academically innovative public research universities.
