CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHT:
J. Robert Hillier, FAIA, was named national chair of the Campaign for Albert Dorman Honors College at Celebration, the annual black-tie event for NJIT, on Nov. 12, 2004. Hillier, who has built one of the largest architectural firms in the country and has long been a dedicated friend of NJIT and Albert Dorman Honors College, chairs the college's Board of Visitors and is a member of the NJIT Board of Overseers.
It is a great pleasure for me to share this evening with you. It is also a great honor to speak to you about the Campaign for Albert Dorman Honors College and to serve as the national chairman for this exciting effort. The goal of the campaign, which we are announcing publicly this evening, is 20 million dollars. Thanks to the generous gifts and pledges we have already received during the campaign's quiet phase, we are more than half way to achieving this goal with a total of nearly 11 million, 200 thousand dollars.
As an architect, I spend much of my time envisioning the future, specifically with respect to changing the built environment that shapes our lives in so many ways. Yet no matter what the commission may be, it is always my hope that the change I help to set in motion will resonate positively for years to come.
Albert Dorman also had positive change in mind when he challenged his alma mater to establish an honors college.
He envisioned a school that would prepare our nation's most talented young men and women to be leaders in their professions and in their communities. I can say without reservation that NJIT and Albert Dorman Honors College have met this challenge. Just as some buildings stand out by virtue of qualities that surpass even a very high norm for design, the college has proven to be an exceptional component of an outstanding university.
But while we can look back on what has been accomplished with great pride, we must continue building the future for students such as Lou Calabrese, and for all those who will follow him.
As we move forward with the Campaign for Albert Dorman Honors College, the future that we will help to build is not only one in which succeeding generations of students will be inspired to achieve academic preeminence but one in which they will also be inspired to lead and to seek lifelong engagement in activity that benefits many others as well as themselves.
I look forward to our building this future together.
