Voluntary Separation

Upon notice of an employee resigning, supervisors are required to notify the Department of Human Resources immediately.  This is critical in ensuring that an employee is not overpaid upon separation from employment.  The supervisor should request written notification of resignation from the employee and attach it to a Personnel Action Form (PAF).  The PAF with attached notification should be forwarded through the normal processing departments.  The supervisor should also provide notice to the employee acknowledging acceptance of the resignation.  This should be in writing.

 

Involuntary Termination

Involuntary separations happen when NJIT makes the decision to terminate an employee’s employment   Reasons may include, but are not limited to, layoff, non-reappointment or misconduct.   Supervisors who have to make a decision under these circumstances must contact Human Resources and meet with the Director of Labor and Employee Relations before any action can be taken.

The supervisor should advise the separating employee of all university property to be returned on the last day of employment. These items may include, but are not limited to:

  • Office and desk keys
  • Office equipment including computers/laptops
  • Uniforms
  • University ID card
  • University parking tag
  • Cell phones
