Holly Stern, an attorney, who has served New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) well for more than a decade, has been promoted to general counsel. Stern had been the acting general counsel.

“I’m pleased to make this announcement,” said Robert A. Altenkirch, Ph.D., president of NJIT.  “I think Holly brings many skills to the job and will serve NJIT well.”

Stern comes to the position with a strong background in legal affairs especially labor management relations and negotiations.  She has solid administrative skills and a positive track record managing people.

Stern began her career in NJIT’s office of the general counsel and subsequently rose to positions of increasing responsibility.  Her most recent position was as assistant vice president for legal and employment affairs.  Prior to joining NJIT, Stern was first assistant attorney for Wayne Township.  Earlier in her career, Stern served a judicial clerkship.

Stern received her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a dual J.D. and master’s degree in public administration from the University of California Law Center, Los Angeles.

Stern lives in Montville with her children Julianne, 17, and David, 14.  From 1993 to 1996, Stern was a member of the Montville Township Board of Education and was vice president of the board from 1995 to1996.  Stern has recently been an invited speaker at conferences sponsored by the College and University Personnel Association.
