Financier and Banker Arthur F. Powell Joins NJIT Board of Trustees

Financier and banker Arthur F. Powell, of Warren, the president and founder of Powell Capital Markets, Inc, joined the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Board of Trustees.  The nomination was approved and confirmed by the New Jersey Senate on Dec. 13, 2004.

Robert A. Altenkirch, PhD, president of NJIT, welcomed Powell to his new position. “It is a great privilege to welcome Art to the NJIT Board of Trustees,” Altenkirch said.  “I look forward to working with him to meet the challenges of the present and to realize our vision of being a preeminent technological research university known for innovation, entrepreneurship, and engagement.  Serving as a trustee at NJIT represents to me one of the highest ideals of service to our home community of Newark, the state of New Jersey and the nation. The wealth of experience and breadth of perspective that an individual like Art brings to this position is invaluable to the continuing success of NJIT's mission in education, research and economic development.”

The NJIT Board of Trustees is the legal governing body of the university; its members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate.

Powell Capital Markets specializes in public finance, providing investment banking, financial advisory and lease advisory services to its clients.

Prior to developing the firm, Powell was a principal in the investment banking firm of Grigsby Brandford Powell Inc.  His responsibilities included marketing efforts for the eastern half of the United States.

Powell’s senior banking experience includes general obligation, revenue, lease and project financings for municipalities, school districts, counties, improvement authorities, utilities authorities, housing authorities, hospitals, parking authorities and water and sewer utilities.

Powell also was the president and founder of AGH Financial Corporation, a financial services institution specializing in equipment lease financings for municipal and corporate clients in the northeast.

Powell is no stranger to civic work. Among the New Jersey organizations on whose boards he has served are the Newark Museum, St. James Preparatory School, the Hospital Center at Orange, the Newark Progressive Development Corporation and the New Jersey Tennis and Sports Foundation.  Powell has also served on the NJIT Board of Overseers and has been a member of the Seton Hall Leadership Council.

Powell holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Purdue University.

NJIT, New Jersey's science and technology university, enrolls approximately 10,000 students pursuing bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in 120 programs. The university consists of six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, College of Architecture and Design, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, College of Computing Sciences and Albert Dorman Honors College.
