Robert Jenny, founder and chief executive officer of Jenny Engineering Corp., of Springfield, a civil engineering firm that pioneered the use of innovative tunneling techniques in America, was recently appointed to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Board of Overseers.
Board members work to give NJIT national recognition by supporting and encouraging research, establishing fellowships and scholarships as well as helping with fund-raising for the university’s academic programs. The board is composed of senior executives, CEO's, entrepreneurs and others who provide a broad range of advocacy for NJIT, both corporate and personal. Board members serve as professional advisers to the university, supplying expertise in many areas.
Jenny, of Mountainside, graduated from NJIT with a bachelor’s of science degree in civil engineering. He also earned a master’s of science degree in civil engineering from NJIT. He is a registered professional engineer in 33 states, a land surveyor in New York and New Jersey and a licensed professional planner in New Jersey.

Jenny is an expert in designing and constructing tunnels and underground structures for highways, railroads and transit systems, and his company introduced innovative tunnel design and construction techniques to the U.S. tunneling industry.
In 1970, Jenny Engineering Corp. introduced the first fully encapsulated epoxy resin ground support dowels for tunnels in America. In 1979, the company was the first to use pre-cast concrete tunnel liners. And in 1992, the company pioneered what is called the New Austrian Tunneling Method in subway stations and tunnels in America.
Jenny has designed tunnels, shafts, substations and other underground structures for 26 tunnel sections of the Washington Metro subway system in Washington, D.C., and has worked on major projects in Cleveland, Boston, Texas and Bangkok, Thailand. He was consulted on the design of the undersea crossover cavern in the English Channel tunnel, and on the construction of the $3 billion Shanxi Wanjiazhai Yellow River Diversion Project, one of the world’s largest civil engineering efforts. He lectures widely on tunnels and underground construction and co-authored Tunneling, the State of the Art, & Tunneling, the State of the Industry.
Jenny was named the Engineer of the Year in 1993 by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration in 1988.
