Daisy Gallegos, of Jersey City, Receives Award at NJIT Convocation

Daisy Gallegos, of Jersey City, a recent NJIT graduate now enrolled in a master's degree program at NJIT, has been selected to receive the graduate Presidential Leadership Award at NJIT's University Convocation, an annual celebration to be held Sept. 14, 2011. Convocation at NJIT traditionally honors select faculty and staff members who have demonstrated the highest level of excellence over a sustained period.

Broadcaster, author and motivational speaker Steve Adubato will speak at the event. A university lecturer, Emmy Award-winning television anchor, and Star-Ledger columnist, Adubato also served in the mid-1980s as New Jersey's youngest state legislator at age 26.  Previously, Adubato anchored three PBS broadcasts including Caucus: New Jersey, an Emmy Award-winning public affairs television series.

In many ways, Gallegos represents the quintessential NJIT student. Although born in this country, she is the daughter of immigrant parents who barely spoke a word of English when they arrived on these shores. Before five, her parents were using her as an English language interpreter so they could pay utility bills. By 18, she had graduated with honors from a struggling inner-city high school.   (ATTENTION EDITORS:  Hi-res photos of the researcher will be taken at the event.  To receive a copy and/or set up an interview, call Sheryl Weinstein, 973-596-3436.)

She never let the challenges of urban life bring her down, but rather believed that education would enable her to become all she dreamed. An NJIT track star, Gallegos was honored for her dedicated work as president of the NJIT student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). To read more about Gallegos, please visit http://www.njit.edu/news/2011/2011-140.php.
