Technology Leader Hassan To Receive Honorary Degree at NJIT Commencement
NeST Group of Companies Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Javad K. Hassan will deliver an inspiring message after receiving an honorary degree at NJIT’s 2012 Commencement to be held Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Mary Sue Sweeney Price, director and chief executive officer of the Newark Museum will also receive an honorary degree at Newark’s Prudential Center, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. NJIT will confer more than 2,400 doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees on members of the Class of 2012. With these degrees, the total number NJIT has awarded tops 73,000.
Hassan began his career at IBM in 1968 as an engineer in its semi-conductor development and manufacturing operations in East Fishkill, New York. In 10 years he became the head of IBM’s semi-conductor development operations, which consisted of over 2,000 engineers and scientists. During this period he obtained over 20 patents in semi-conductor technology for his inventions and was awarded IEEE Fellow status. Subsequently, Hassan held positions as corporate head of engineering and technology atIBM’s world headquarters in New York as well as the head of their storage business, a $6 billion revenue business.
In 1988 Hassan joined AMP Inc., the world’s largest electronic components/connector company, as corporate head of technology. In his 10-year career with AMP, he diversified the company into fiber-optics and wireless technologies and built that business to over $1.5 billion. He retired from AMP as president of the Global Inter Connect Systems business in 1998 to start an entrepreneurial career.
From 1998 until now, Hassan has built a worldwide technology business, The NeST Group, with operations in India, the Middle East, Japan, Europe and Americas. The NeST Group has over 4000 employees, and offers products and technologies in health care (ultrasound systems, MRI equipment, PAC systems, etc.) and green energy (fuel cells, wind turbine control systems, wireless and fiber-optic communications systems). The NeST Group’s worldwide customers include GE, Toshiba, Hitachi, ABB, Verizon, Honeywell, France Telecom, and Ehtisalat. Last year, NJIT and NeST signed an
agreement to offer a post-graduate program in Global Technology Management at NeST
headquarters in southwestern India. In addition, NJIT and NeST are exploring opportunities to bring intellectual property to commercialization. The NeST Group’s corporate headquarters is located in Chantilly, VA. Hassan resides in McLean, VA.
