NJIT President Joel Bloom Named To NJ Biz Power 100 List
NJIT President Joel S. Bloom was named to the NJ Biz prestigious power list of the 100 most powerful people in New Jersey business. Dr. Bloom was ranked 55.
“The NJIT President is overseeing the transformative Gateway Development Project of housing and retail to better integrate the campus and city, and brought in well-respected Monique King-Viehland to help. ‘It is an important project for Newark itself but also the bigger picture of New Jersey,’ says a source,” wrote NJ Biz.Only a few weeks earlier, NJ Biz named King-Viehland as someone to watch. Others on the list included Governor Chris Christie (1); South Jersey insurance executive George E. Norcross III (2); Ralph Izzo (10), chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of the Public Service Enterprise Group, Inc., who in 2010 received from NJIT an honorary doctor of science.
Bloom started his career in industry working as an economist. He subsequently became an educator and administrator for the New York City public schools. Prior to coming to New Jersey, he worked as a research director and instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University. In New Jersey, he managed state and federally-funded curriculum development and training centers for the state. From 1983 through 1990, Dr. Bloom served as assistant commissioner in the NJ Department of Education for the Division of General Academic Education. He was responsible for managing many of the education department’s initiatives including competency testing, curriculum content standards, pre-school programs, establishment of 17 model effective schools, over 300 grants and contracts, and a $24 million budget.
