Xiaolu Wang, of Newark, a doctoral student at NJIT, was named the 2013 recipient of The Louis Berger International Scholar Award on Feb. 13, 2013. Wang will receive a stipend of approximately $19,500 to cover tuition and living costs. In 1997, The Louis Berger Group, Inc. established the Louis Berger International Scholar program at NJIT. To date, the program has provided scholarships to nine NJIT students.“The Louis Berger Group has always done its best to give back, and these scholarships represent one way of doing so,” said Robert J. Nardi, Louis Berger Group senior vice president. “It’s only natural for us to support NJIT because the university provides our company with so many of the fine professionals that have helped make our organization the success it is today.”
Wang enrolled in the fall of 2012 in the department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) at NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering to study carrier transport in nano-electronic devices. Prior to enrolling at NJIT, she had worked for several years in the semiconductor industry. Wang received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from NJIT in 2011 and a bachelor’s degree in the same subject matter from Jianguan University, China, in 2008. She maintains a 3.85 grade point average and expects to receive her doctorate from NJIT in four years.
“Xiaolu has been a wonderful addition to our department,” said her advisor and NJIT Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Chair Leonard Tsybeskov. “She is a top student. We can always depend on her research.”
The Louis Berger International Scholar Award at NJIT was established in January of 1997. The purpose of the Dr. Louis Berger Endowed Fund is to provide an annual award to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate candidate. The recipient must be enrolled in a field of relevance to The Louis Berger Group and must be willing to serve as an intern with the company.
“Dr. Berger started the company 60 years ago and quickly expanded our work globally,” said Sean T. McGonigal, NJIT alum and associate vice president at The Louis Berger Group. “This scholarship program enables a deserving international student, such as Xiaolu, to continue her studies. In return, we hope to continue our relationship with Xiaolu Wang, throughout her studies and on future projects in her native country, China.”
