NJIT Professor and IEEE Fellow Mengchu Zhou, an expert in robotics and automation, received a distinguished service award earlier this month from the IEEE division on robotics and automation. Zhou’s honor was for dedicated work over a 25-year period to establish a new journal in the field, IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation, serving for years in a variety of editorial positions. He was also applauded for a series of automation conferences that he developed. The 2008 conference was especially notable because it attracted the participation of key automation companies including GM, Toyota, Simens and Bayer. The effort resulted in both financial and technical support for the organization. Most recently, Zhou has encouraged the Society to focus on the latest thinking and research in automation in logistics; agricultural robotics and automation; smart buildings; and sustainable production automation. Coming up, Zhou will have two of his articles published in the proceedings 2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
