C. Stephen Cordes, of Westfield, Is Named to NJIT Board of Trustees

C. Stephen Cordes, of Westfield, has been named to the NJIT Board of Trustees.  Cordes is an equity partner and managing director of Clarion Partners, a leading investment advisory firm headquartered in New York City specializing in real estate with $23 billion in assets under management.  He is a member of the firm’s board of directors, management executive board and investment committee.  He serves as chief operating officer of the company and is the head of its portfolio management activities.  Cordes is portfolio manager and chairman of the board of a $2.5 billion investment fund created through the 2005 privatization of a publicly-traded real estate investment trust specializing in multifamily property ownership and development.

Cordes is active in several industry investment management organizations, including the National Multi Housing Council, where he is a member of the executive committee of the board of directors; the Urban Land Institute; the Pension Real Estate Association; and the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate.  He is a mentor in association with the Robert Toigo Foundation, which provides financial support and career and life guidance to outstanding minority MBA students of the top U.S. business schools as they complete their studies and transition into careers in the financial services industry.

Prior to joining Clarion Partners in 1997, Cordes held positions with Jones Lang LaSalle (1992-1997), where he worked with overseas investors and was a member of the North American executive committee, with the RREEF Funds (1983-1992), where he headed its US asset management activities, with CIGNA (1979-1983), where he managed investments and co-led a real estate fund, and with the City of Newark (1972-1979), where he was capital budget director during the initial years of the Gibson Administration. 

He holds a master’s in public administration from Rutgers University (1978) and a bachelor’s of science in industrial engineering from NJIT (1972), where he currently serves as the chairman of the board of visitors of the Albert Dorman Honors College, with which he has been affiliated since 1999. In 2009, he received NJIT’s Edward F. Weston Medal for Professional Achievement, which is presented to alumni in recognition of outstanding personal, professional and civic achievement, and commitment to the development of the university.

Cordes and his spouse of 34 years, Francene, reside in Westfield and are the parents of Bryan (28) and Lauren (24).  In the Westfield area, he has been a member of the boards of trustees of the Westfield Senior Citizens Housing Corporation (2007-2010); Westfield United Fund (2005-2011); and Mount Saint Mary Academy, Watchung, where he was chairman of its finance committee (2005-2011).
