Meet DOTTIE, NJIT's Entry in the 2017 Solar Decathlon China

WHAT: A gallery exhibition showcasing drawings and 3D models of DOTTIE (digitally operated tectonic integrated environment), a single-family, sustainable house that integrates the digital and the analog, local traditions and global considerations, and designers from the U.S. and China. The house, a modular structure that can be digitally fabricated, is inspired by both Chinese and American vernacular architectures and will accommodate four generations. The design will be judged in July.

WHEN: Monday, Nov. 28, from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. A reception, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., is by invitation only, while faculty and members of the media are welcome. Doors open to the public at 8 p.m. The exhibition will remain open until Friday, Dec. 2.

WHERE: The CoAD Gallery at 220 Weston Hall on the NJIT campus.

WHO: NJIT has formed a joint venture with Fujian University of Technology in China (Team NJFJ) to design and build a functional, sustainable house to compete in the 2017 Solar Decathlon China. The 35-member team includes architecture, interior design, industrial design, graphic design, civil engineering, environmental studies, sustainability, concrete industry management and business majors at the two schools.

WHY: Launched by China’s National Energy Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy, and presented by the China Overseas Development Association, the decathlon is a green energy and building technology competition with a total of 22 teams participating, many of them joint ventures between universities around the world. The host city this year is Dezhou in Shandong province.
