Walter Konon

Walter Konon, chair of the civil and environmental engineering department at New Jersey Institute of Technology, is a professional engineer and licensed building inspector with an expertise in construction engineering, safety standards and fire protection. He regularly teaches graduate courses in tunnel construction and safety at NJIT, where for 28 years he has worked as a professor of civil and environmental engineering and heads the civil engineering department’s construction division.

Konon, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, won a Fulbright scholarship to teach civil engineering at the Moscow Institute of Civil Engineering. He has completed infrastructure research for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Prior to teaching, Konon worked as a structural test engineer for Grumman Aircraft Engineering, and was a consultant in construction engineering, safety and forensic engineering. He is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and a member of the International Society of Explosive Engineers.

Konon received both his bachelor’s degree and his master’s degree in civil engineering from City College of New York, City University.
