Maher recently published Nature's New Deal: The Civilian Conservation Corps and the Roots of the American Environmental Movement (Oxford University Press, 2008) and is currently researching and writing an environmental history of the space race during the 1960s and 1970s.

The student team of Quaison Carter (shown at left), Louis Noto and Paulius Skema finished ahead of teams from Yale, Columbia and Johns Hopkins, among others, for their presentation of the company Fetchfire, which was founded by Carter. The ECVC business plan competition offers student entrepreneurs from top universities across the East Coast the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel of venture capital judges from DFJ and DFJ Gotham.

NJIT will receive an Overall Improvement Award based on the judges’ analysis of three years of fundraising data submitted to the council’s annual survey. “This is a result of a total University Advancement effort and the significant support and involvement of President Robert A. Altenkirch and the academic deans,” said NJIT Vice President for University Advancement Charles R. Dees, Jr., PhD.

Architecture Faculty and Students Fabricate NYC Listening Studio Project http://www.njit.edu/news/2009/2009-202.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2009/2009-202.phpThu, 21 May 2009 00:00:00 -0400 The Listening Studio, a breakthrough innovation for people with hearing loss that recently opened at the Center for Hearing and Communication in lower Manhattan, was fabricated by students and faculty at NJIT's College of Architecture and Design using the university's Fabrication Laboratory, or FABLAB. The audio and video installation is acoustically designed to simulate an array of real-life listening environments. Brooks Atwood, an adjunct professor of architecture at NJIT and a principal of POD DESIGN+MEDIA LLC, helped design the project. Priya's paper is based on her MS thesis work at NJIT; she is now applying to the PhD program.

Since 1991, NJIT has partnered with Panasonic in the competition sponsored by the company, which tests many skills as high school teams vie for college scholarships and other prizes.

"We hope that staff and faculty will engage in conversations about what it means to be part of our multicultural community and how we can share our knowledge in the world, as well as celebrate our many differences that make our multicultural community an exciting place to live and learn," said Joseph Rios, assistant director for Leadership and Diversity Programs.

The film reconstructs the response of Newark’s black citizens and the actions of police and city leaders to the “Newark riots” of 1967 and also examines their subsequent influence on the life of NJ’s largest urban center. Filmmakers Marylou Tibaldo-Bongiorno and Jerome Bongiorno (at left) will attend the screening and participate in a discussion. Revolution ’67 has garnered accolades that include the 2008 John E. O’Connor Film Award of the American Historical Association; O’Connor, NJIT professor emeritus of history, will attend the screening.

In addition to winning first place overall, the team placed first in Structural Efficiency and Stiffness. The team now advances to the 2009 Steel Bridge Nationals scheduled for the Memorial Day Weekend at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
