Xiaolu Wang, of Newark, a doctoral student at NJIT, was named the 2013 recipient of The Louis Berger International Scholar Award on Feb. 13, 2013. Wang will receive a stipend of approximately $19,500 to cover tuition and living costs. In 1997, The Louis Berger Group, Inc. established the Louis Berger International Scholar program at NJIT. To date, the program has provided scholarships to nine NJIT students.

Farrow, PhD, who with his research team have discovered how to make nanoscale arrays of the world’s smallest probe for investigating the electrical properties of individual living cells was awarded yesterday, Oct. 4, 2012, the NJIT Board of Overseers Excellence in Research Prize and Medal. This prize is the most prestigious research award at NJIT. It is the fifth time the award has been made.

NJIT professors and alumni will be among the innovators honored this evening at the 22nd Annual New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame Awards ceremony in Hoboken. Timothy Chang, PhD, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive a Special Award for his achievements in the areas of ultra-high precision systems, genetic systems, robotics and motion control; and Yun-Qing Shi, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be recognized for his work in digital forensics and security. Jingjing Zhang, a PhD candidate in NJIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will receive the Graduate Student Award. Vikki Hazelwood, PhD, who received her MS from NJIT in 1998, will receive the Advancement of Invention Award for a pioneering process for translational research in medicine and Richard Caizza, who received a certificate in plastics technology from NJIT in 1992, will receive the Inventor of the Year award for his "Single-Handedly Actuatable Safety Shield for Needles" patent.

Doctoral Student Awarded Fellowship from National Institutes of Health

Johnson, PhD, an associate professor in NJIT's Department of Humanities, has won the 2010 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Award in Technical and Scientific Communication in the category of Best Book in Technical or Scientific Communication for The Language of Work: Technical Communication at Lukens Steel, 1810-1925 (Baywood Publishing Company, Inc., 2009). The award will be announced at the 2011 Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW) meeting in Atlanta in March. She is a resident of Oak Ridge.

Meegoda, an expert in geo-environmental engineering and a professor in the NJIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Geo-environmental engineers apply basic geological and hydrological science, including soil and rock mechanics and groundwater hydrology, to any number of different environmental problems.

Netflix Prize Winners Tout Collaboration for Success at NJIT Teacher Event

Netflix Prize winners Bob Bell and Chris Volinsky, statisticians at AT&T Labs Research, told 22 science and technology teachers last week that collaboration was key to winning the prize money. The occasion was a teacher luncheon, wrapping up a three-day conference at NJIT highlighting the use of robots in science, math and technology classes. The NJIT Center for Pre-College Programs hosted the event, thanks to Netflix prize money won by an AT&T research team and donated last year to NJIT by the corporation. Teachers walked away with teaching ideas, plus Lego Mind Storm sets to continue building robots back in their classrooms.

DOE Awards NJIT $468,495 Grant To Create Courses To Train Energy Auditors

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded NJIT $468,495 to create a comprehensive series of four courses to train and teach mechanical engineers in the New York Metropolitan Region how to improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings. The NJIT Center for Building Knowledge, which thanks to its involvement with regional utilities and other state agencies has had much experience doing this kind of work, will organize and run the training sessions. Center Executive Director Deane M. Evans will be the project director.
