Netflix Prize Winners Tout Collaboration for Success at NJIT Teacher Event http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-254.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-254.phpThu, 15 Jul 2010 00:00:00 -0400 Netflix Prize winners Bob Bell and Chris Volinsky, statisticians at AT&T Labs Research, told 22 science and technology teachers last week that collaboration was key to winning the prize money. The occasion was a teacher luncheon, wrapping up a three-day conference at NJIT highlighting the use of robots in science, math and technology classes. The NJIT Center for Pre-College Programs hosted the event, thanks to Netflix prize money won by an AT&T research team and donated last year to NJIT by the corporation. Teachers walked away with teaching ideas, plus Lego Mind Storm sets to continue building robots back in their classrooms.

Center Executive Director Deane M. Evans will be the project director.

Hahn, Formerly of Edison and Matawan, Receives NJIT Alumni Achievement Award for Creating Coded Magnetic Strips Used in Credit Cards http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-220.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-220.phpWed, 16 Jun 2010 00:00:00 -0400 It happens many millions of times each day around the world ― the coded magnetic strip on a plastic credit card is automatically read to complete a purchase. The same technology makes it possible to use an ATM and to pay for riding on a subway or bus with a paper fare card. And it's all thanks to the role played by NJIT alum Arthur Hahn, formerly of Matawan and Edison, in the introduction of this indispensable innovation.  For this body of work, Hahn received on May 22, 2010, the NJIT Alumni Achievement Award.   Hahn now lives in San Diego.

His life has had figurative touches of color too ― as a fencing champion, community activist and enthusiastic tour guide for foreign visitors to the U.S.

Yamba, who was one of the early founders of a partnership that has enabled ECC and NJIT, Rutgers-Newark and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to collaborate on numerous collegiate and community initiatives in the city's University Heights district, discussed the role of education in the revitalization of Newark. "Newark is our home–and home to many of our students," said Yamba. "We must be active participants in the unfolding of its future."

Electronics was his lucky pick. “I immediately fell in love with the class, the teacher, and the subject matter,” recalled Sakowski, now a senior. “And I've not lost an ounce of passion since then.”
