A Rare Double for NJIT Highlanders http://www.njit.edu/news/2004/2004-085.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2004/2004-085.phpMon, 21 Jun 2004 00:00:00 -0400 Brian Callahan, who has guided the Highlanders to their most successful seasons as members of NCAA Division II as head baseball coach at NJIT, was recently voted the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in balloting done by the league's nine head coaches. Callahan and the Highlanders set the school record for victories in a season with 23 in 2004. The team earned its second consecutive CACC Tournament berth, as well as its first ECAC postseason appearance since 1990. He has coached 10 all-conference athletes in his NJIT career. Callahan, who has a 62-96 overall record, was one of the nation's youngest head coaches when he was hired in the fall of 2000 after one year as an NJIT assistant.  Chris Schwartz, a senior at NJIT, was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Year. He went on to earn first-team all-state and second-team all-region honors, and was named team most valuable player for the third time. Schwartz led the CACC in triples (5), total bases (103) and slugging (.617) and finished second in homeruns (8) and third in hits (59), while hitting .353 with 23 extra-base hits and 33 runs batted in. This season, he started at least 10 games at three positions -- first base, shortstop and left field. Schwartz is NJIT's all-time leader in hits, runs, runs batted in, triples and homers.
