Students Wear Moon Suits, Learn Brownfield Clean-Up at NJIT http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-184.php http://www.njit.edu/news/2010/2010-184.phpFri, 14 May 2010 00:00:00 -0400 Tromping around the classroom in oversized moon suits, a class of disadvantaged, young adults from New Jersey's inner cities has been studying this past week at NJIT how to start a career cleaning up hazardous wastes.  The program, run under the auspices of the New Jersey Youth Corps, is part of a larger four-week course of study.  It aims to put people to work, plus teach them life skills, including how to complete a high school diploma.   Recent program graduates will soon head to the Gulf of Mexico to clean up the oil spill.

This intensive training program prepares disadvantaged young adults for careers as environmental technicians.

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the program prepares unemployed or underemployed young adults for careers as technicians in a diverse educational environment that touches on all aspects of environmental remediation. The health and safety component of the curriculum will be taught at NJIT through the New Jersey Youth Corps of Phillipsburg in keeping with the university's ongoing mission to foster economic development at all levels throughout the state.
