NJIT Graduate Student - Wins Academic Award in Catalent Institute Global Life Science Competition

NJIT doctoral student Maxx Capece was awarded one of three, $2,000 first place prizes in a competition sponsored by the Catalent Institute. His winning submission entitled, “Modified Release of Dry-Polymer Coated Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients,” provided a review of applications of dry-polymer control release drug delivery technologies on the particulate scale.

NJIT Students Take First and Second Place in ISPE NJ Student Poster Competition

Nine students in NJIT's Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering participated in the 2010 New Jersey Chapter of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) Student Poster Competition on April 26. They were: Ezinwa Elele, Stephanie Masotti, Sara Mina, Shilan Motamedvaziri, Miraat Patel, Fernando Rivas, Ramana Susarla, Yimin Wang, and Min Yang. Wang took first place with a poster entitled: "Toward a More Reliable USP Dissolution Testing Apparatus II" and also received the highest score among all the participants in this competition. Stephanie Masotti took second place with a poster entitled "Expanded and Simplified Method To Produce In Vitro Axon Stretch Injury." Wang and Masotti will compete in the National Student Poster Competition in November 2010 at the ISPE National Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

NJIT Professors and Doctoral Students Participate in 2010 SPE Annual Technical Conference

Several NJIT professors and graduate students participated in the 2010 Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Annual Technical Conference on May 16-19 in Orlando, Florida. Attending were Professor Marino Xanthos, Research Professors Costas Gogos and Peng Wang of CBPE, Kwabena Narh, professor in NJIT's Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Linjie Zhu and Herman Suwardee of NJIT's Polymer Processing Institute (PPI), as well as five PhD students: Huiju Liu, who received his PhD degree this week; Jin Uk Ha, Qian Zheng, Min Yang, and Graciela Terife. Peng Wang was the organizer, on behalf of the Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering and PPI, of two special sessions on pharmaceutical hot melt extrusion. Six technical papers on research conducted on campus were presented by Wang, Gogos, Suwardee, Liu, Ha, and Terife. During the May 18 SPE awards ceremonies, Xanthos and Liu received the Heinz List Reactive Extrusion and the Professor Lew Erwin Outstanding Graduate Student Awards, respectively.

Her award comes with a $500 cash prize and an invitation to attend (all expenses paid) the national AIAA conference to be held in January 2010 in Orlando, Florida. Priya's paper is based on her MS thesis work at NJIT; she is now applying to the PhD program.

Knox passed away on Sept. 24, 2008; he was 53. Speakers led by NJIT President Robert A. Altenkirch remembered Knox as an exceptionally dedicated administrator, teacher, colleague and sports enthusiast whose legacy continues in the lives of the numerous students he mentored in his 25 years at NJIT.

NJIT EOP Students Take Second Place in 2009 ExxonMobil SME Bowl

Felicia Amaechi, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering, and Karen Martinez, a junior majoring in chemical engineering, captured second place in the ExxonMobil Subject Matter Expert (SME) Bowl at the 2009 Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Conference on Nov. 8 in Baltimore. The SME Bowl is a competition with a "College Bowl" atmosphere where student teams representing the 10 SWE regions compete to answer engineering, math and science questions. Felicia and Karen, who are both in NJIT's Educational Opportunity Program, were part of a five-member team that included fellow region members from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Each team member received a $75 cash prize and $1500 for the region. Felicia is president of NJIT's SWE section and a Murray Women’s Center Ambassador.

Iowa Corn Promotion Board, NJIT to License Breakthrough, Safe Bio-Plastic Alternative

The Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB), NJIT and University of Sao Paulo today announced a joint agreement for licensing four pending patents on a safe, building block chemical derived from corn known as isosorbide to chemists. The agreement marks a step forward in developing applications and markets for corn-based chemistry.
