Digital Design Students Serve as Volunteers at SIGGRAPH 2010 in Los Angeles

Daniel Palma of Paterson and Benjamin Gross of Lambertville, two juniors from NJIT's School of Art + Design, were selected to serve in the Student Volunteer Program at the Association of Computing Machinery’s 2010 SIGGRAPH Conference. Admission to the Student Volunteer Program is highly competitive and provides participants access to network with industry leaders and the opportunity to attend short courses, presentations of production case studies, and technical paper sessions. Students provide a minimum of 30 hours of service during the conference, which started on July 24 and concluded on July 30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Palma and Gross are both third-year students in the Entertainment Track in NJIT’s new BA program in Digital Design. For the bilingual Palma, an EOP student and past recipient of a Director’s Scholarship in the School of Art + Design, this marked the second consecutive year he was selected to participate at SIGGRAPH; 2010 was the first SIGGRAPH conference for Gross, a student in the Albert Dorman Honors College at NJIT.

Tromping around the classroom in oversized moon suits, a class of disadvantaged, young adults from New Jersey's inner cities has been studying this past week at NJIT how to start a career cleaning up hazardous wastes. The program, run under the auspices of the New Jersey Youth Corps, is part of a larger four-week course of study. It aims to put people to work, plus teach them life skills, including how to complete a high school diploma. Recent program graduates will soon head to the Gulf of Mexico to clean up the oil spill.

Last summer NJIT launched an affordable graduate online tuition rate for out-of-state students. “The new online tuition makes it possible for students anywhere in or outside the US to study full or part-time at NJIT,” said Gale Tenen Spak, associate vice president of the Division of Continuing Professional Education. Spak manages the program. “This is a good opportunity to access programs which offer the right courses for the right jobs and which are taught at a nationally-ranked science and technology university.”
