NJIT Awards 2,643 Degrees to Members of the Class of 2013 at Prudential Center

With woops, cheers and mortarboards flying, NJIT today awarded 2,643 degrees to the members of the class of 2013. This brings the total number of degrees awarded by the university to more than 74,678. The ceremony was held at Newark’s Prudential Center.

NJIT Board of Trustees Approves Submission of Nearly $200 Million in Campus Construction and Infrastructure Projects in Response to State's RFPs

The Board of Trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology has approved $200 million in construction and infrastructure projects on the university’s Newark campus, designed to enhance and expand NJIT’s role as the state’s science and technology university and a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. The university will apply to the Secretary of Higher Education for $152 million from the Building Our Future Bond Act, state revolving funds and other sources to support the projects.

Although widespread rebuilding in the hard-hit New York metro region from Super Storm Sandy has not yet begun, NJIT Assistant Professor Mohamed Mahgoub, PhD, PE, says when the hammers start swinging, it’s time to look at autoclaved aerated concrete. The material, best known as AAC, has been heralded as the building material of the new millennium. It’s a lightweight, easily-crafted manufactured stone, strong enough to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes when reinforced with steel.

Ronald H. Rockland, PhD, chair of NJIT's Department of Engineering Technology, has been named a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Rockland, of Parsippany, will receive the designation at the ASEE Annual Conference this coming June in Canada.

CIM Program Students Receive Pervious Concrete Certification

Students in the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program at NJIT recently received certification in pervious concrete, a process that included a morning lecture on the knowledge needed for contractors to manage the material followed by an actual pouring of pervious concrete outside of the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center. Many other students were able to watch the pour as the future barbecue area and event space was being paved for the NJIT community. The program was sponsored by the PCA Northeast Cement Shippers Association.

Concrete Industry Management Students Visit World Trade Center Memorial Construction Site

Students in the Department of Engineering Technology’s Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program received a special invitation from The Port Authority of NY and NJ to view $23 billion of construction at the New York World Trade Center site. Mohamed Mahgoub, assistant professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Allyn Luke in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering accompanied the students last week to the construction site, where they had the opportunity to ask questions about the project and job opportunities as they viewed the onsite mixing and testing of concrete.

GreenBuild Selects Newark's Leean Orama for Scholarship To Attend Conference

Leean “Coco” Orama, a senior majoring in engineering technology and president of the NJIT Student Senate, was one of only four students nationwide selected to receive an all-expense-paid scholarship to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) GreenBuild International Conference and Expo in Phoenix today through tomorrow.

NJIT Receives $27,000 from National Starch for Pre-College Programs

NJIT received $27,000 from Bridgewater-based National Starch and Chemical Foundation to support two NJIT’s pre-college programs, both benefiting women. The Women in Engineering Technology Initiative FEMME received $12,000 while a similar initiative to promote positive changes in the educational environment in Newark classrooms received $15,000.

Rockland Named Engineering Technology Council Director of ASEE

Rockland, PhD, interim chair of the department of engineering technology and professor in the departments of engineering technology and biomedical engineering at NJIT, was recently elected as an Engineering Technology Council (ETC) Director by the engineering technology members of the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE). The ETC of ASEE is the national organization that speaks for engineering technology education and is committed to promoting quality education and creative endeavors in engineering technology.

NJIT To Graduate Inspiring Late-Bloomer on Second Career Who Can Do It All

Maureen Sturgeon, a non-traditional, adult student who is on her second career, may be the most industrious student to graduate May 17, 2007, from NJIT. Sturgeon will graduate with an almost-perfect grade-point average, while holding down a full-time job as the engineering inspector for Franklin Township.

NJIT Signs Joint Admissions Agreement with the County College of Morris

Students at the County College of Morris (CCM) who earn an associate degree in applied science can now transfer seamlessly to NJIT to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology. Marilyn Ayres, dean of CCM, and Robert English, chair of the engineering technology department at NJIT, signed a joint-admissions agreement recently at the CCM campus. “Over the years, many CCM graduates have gone on to become outstanding graduates of NJIT as well, and we think this articulation agreement will promote interest in the engineering technology programs at both institutions,” said English.
